📚 Part 9 Study Plan

This part covers five important July 2026 current affairs topics related to geothermal energy, coal gasification, healthcare, vaccination and long-duration energy storage.

ENERGY, HEALTHCARE, ENVIRONMENT & TECHNOLOGY

41. India Commissions First Geothermal Wells at Puga Valley

India commissioned its first and deepest twin geothermal wells at Puga Valley in Eastern Ladakh.

The wells were commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and executed by the ONGC Energy Centre.

🌋 Geothermal Wells — Key Facts

  • Location: Puga Valley, Eastern Ladakh
  • Well depth: 1,000 metres each
  • Altitude: More than 14,000 feet
  • Executed by: ONGC Energy Centre
  • Energy source: Heat from inside the Earth

⚙️ How Geothermal Wells Work

  • Heat comes from hot rocks beneath Earth's surface.
  • Water enters underground rock cracks.
  • Water gets heated and turns into steam.
  • Steam is used to generate electricity.
  • Hot water may emerge naturally as hot springs and sulphur fumaroles.
⭐ Remember: Puga Valley → Eastern Ladakh → First & deepest twin geothermal wells → ONGC Energy Centre

42. National Coal Gasification Mission

India aims to achieve 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal gasification capacity by 2030.

The present operational or under-implementation capacity is 22.6 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA).

⛏️ Coal Gasification — Key Facts

  • Target: 100 MT capacity by 2030
  • Current capacity: 22.6 MTPA
  • Scheme approved: 13 May 2026
  • Financial outlay: ₹37,500 crore
  • Expected coal/lignite utilisation: About 75 MTPA

🏭 Existing Projects

  • Jindal Steel Limited (JSL): 8 MTPA — Operational
  • Talcher Fertilisers Limited (TFL): 2.6 MTPA — Under implementation
  • 8 projects: 12 MTPA — Under implementation
⭐ Remember: Coal gasification → Coal converted into syngas → Mainly Carbon Monoxide + Hydrogen → 100 MT target by 2030

43. Semaglutide 2.4 mg

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) approved Wegovy (Semaglutide 2.4 mg) for treating MASH.

Wegovy is developed by Novo Nordisk.
